March of consonants. The path to being trademarks was facilitated for abbreviations. Comment by Konstantin Suvorov for the “Kommersant” newspaper.
The Intellectual Property Rights Court has expanded the range of possible verbal trademarks for registration. Using the example of the Danish NTG Nordic Transport Group case, the court recognized that an abbreviation of consonant letters can be registered as a trademark. Previously Rospatent used to refuse legal protection of such letter combinations, and even “Gazprom Neft” has managed to register its GPN brand only this year. Lesser-known companies failed to succeed, but now, thanks to the new position of the court, the lawyers say it will be easier.
